Bowser's gets a very mixed review. Some parts of it are quite nice, while others are not. The decor is almost attractive! Dried flower arrangements of subtle shades of rose and green adorn the walls and the wallpaper is a nice complement. Unfortunately, the old fashioned red plastic banquettes deter from the total look. They need to be removed and attractive Formica topped tables or tablecloths with an acrylic covering need to be added. The tiny white Christmas type lights are a pleasant addition, but the room remains a little dark. A train runs around the ceiling on a track that sits above a yellowing plastic platform. Some of the food is quite good and some is mediocre. The time we were there the wait staff was sloppy and somewhat disinterested in what they were doing. They chose to gossip with each other. This condition is probably changing and we do not include it as part of the evaluation. It did not, however, make us feel like valued customers.
RESTAURANT: BOWSER'S 751 Bedford Street (Route 18), Abington, MA DATE: August 11, 2000 MEAL: Lunch BREAD: Cornbread - a moist, slightly sweet piece served with
those miniature sized butter packets SALAD: Cole Slaw - a difference of opinion here! Wendy liked
the fact that the Cole Slaw was cut into tiny pieces and was
very creamy. Tom would have liked larger pieces with less
creaminess and more vinegar. APPETIZER: Corn Chowder (part of meal price) - Wendy did not like
this at all. It was much too sweet and more highly seasoned
than creamy. Clam Chowder - Tom felt that this, "tasted as if it
came from a can." It was undoubtedly homemade as this
restaurant also has its own attached seafood market. The
chowder had too much of a clam juice flavor and had too many
other seasonings for his taste. ENTREE: Fried Seafood Plate ($10.95) Excellent - Fresh Shrimp,
Scallops, Whole Clams, and Scrod with Homemade Onion Rings.
The batter was light and the seafood was well done. The
Onion Rings were thin and very nicely done. The only problem
was that the Onion Rings were on top and the plate was
filled high with food. In order to reach the other
ingredients you either had to eat through the Onions Rings
or let items fall off the plate. A bigger plate might
help. DESSERT: OTHER: Very informal Plenty of free parking Stick with the choice of a salad rather than the
chowders Seafood market is attached to the restaurant (Old Town
Fish Market) Large portions OVERALL: B- Although the entrees were excellent, this restaurant
has some drawbacks. With a little facelift, it could be far
more attractive. As it is, it is similar to a fast food
restaurant with upgraded decor.
