WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

"Host to great Americans since 1716. Originally built in 1716, and ran as a hotel since 1889, The Colonial Inn has stood as an enduring landmark of gracious hospitality in historic Concord. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it lives in the midst of revolutionary and literary history Including the Old North Bridge, the Wright Tavern, Walden Pond, and the homes of Alcott, Emerson, Hawthorne, and Thoreau."

Some restaurants have a nice setting and some have good food, but the Colonial Inn has both. We sat in the main dining room, which has retained a large part of its colonial past. There are oil lanterns sitting on the linen tablecloths and period paintings on the walls. Fresh flowers in glass vases are placed on the table along with heavy silverware and attractive glassware. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is somewhat "formal". There are other dining areas for larger parties and they all have an air of elegance. The Tavern also serves a full menu, but it was more pub like. Since it was a hot summer night when we visited, diners tended to be casually dressed but we suspect the dress may be a little less casual in the winter.

RESTAURANT:

CONCORD'S COLONIAL INN

ADDRESS:

48 Monument Square, Concord, MA

DATE:

July 23, 2001

MEAL:

Dinner

BREAD:

Dinner rolls and a loaf of sliced corn bread served with molded butter - excellent and both breads were served while they were still warm

SALAD:

APPETIZER:

Prince Edward Island Mussels ($9.00) Excellent - "Sautéed With Tomatoes, Leeks, Hot Sausage and Grilled Flat Bread"

ENTREE:

Crispy Calamari Salad ($9.00) - "Tossed in a Black Olive Vinaigrette with Roasted Red Peppers and Bitter Lettuce". Good, but the vinaigrette was so strong that it overwhelmed the rest of the salad.

Roast Prime Rib of Beef ($24.00) - "Served with Mashed Potatoes and Steamed Vegetables. Topped with Horseradish Au Jus Chive Popover". Very good. The prime rib was cooked as ordered but was not as tender as it could have been. It was served on top of broccoli, carrots, and the potatoes. The chive popover was good but a little dry.

DESSERT:

OTHER:

Parking on the surrounding streets

A nice spot for a leisurely meal!

OVERALL:

A for atmosphere

B for food

We will definitely return here when we want a bit of old-fashioned charm. Since the entrees are a bit pricey and do not include a salad, it is not a particularly good value for the price. The overall experience is a nice one, however, and is strong enough to overlook the only "average" food.
