Gusto is squeezed in among a group of nondescript buildings housing a bakery, stores, and three-deckers, but the food is a certainly not nondescript!. Each dinner was attractively presented and showed off the chef's talents. They all had something a bit different about them that made them unique. This Italian trattoria knows how to charm its diners. Although it is small, about 40 tables tightly fill two rooms, it has the feel of a big establishment. The granite topped tables have blue water glasses and a basket of Italian breads with a serving of olive oil for dipping placed on them. Jazz music plays in the background and may be a bit overpowering.

RESTAURANT: GUSTO 4147 Washington Street,
Roslindale, MA DATE: January 2003 MEAL: Dinner BREAD: SALAD: Antipasto ($12.50) Excellent -
Ordered as an entree. A large portion of rolled meats and
vegetables nicely arranged on an oval plate. APPETIZER: ENTREE: Sirloin of Beeef with gorganzola
butter, fried leeks, garlicky green beans, and potato gratin
($19.50) Overall a very nice choice even though the sirloin
was not tender enough. It was cooked as ordered. The leeks
were cut like very thin onion strings and were excellent.
The gorganzola butter was different and added a unique
flavor to the beef. The green beans had a bit of garlic, but
not too much. Grilled Pork Chop with roast
sweet potato, braised apples, and smoked bacon
(18.50)Excellent - Perfectly cooked. A interesting
arrangement of flavors. Pan Seared Scallops with sauteed
mixed mushrooms and creste di gallo pasta. ($18.50)
Excellent - Full of flavor. Another unusual mix of
ingredients that worked well. DESSERT: OTHER: Parking on the
street A partial bar with a varied wine
list OVERALL: B+ For 3 of the meals and a B-
for the sirloin
Overall a B+ for a classy restaurant in an area that you
might not expect to find such well prepared food.
