WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

Hungry Howie's is the ultimate cheap pizza joint! For $3.99 the diner gets an all-you-can-eat buffet that includes: calzone, pizza (8 kinds the day we were there), salad, soup, pasta, and desserts. The food is not great, but is a bargain for the price. For an additional $1.50 a refillable soft drink can be added. When we arrived the pizzas (cut into small slices) were almost gone and had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. They were a bit cold and not terribly good. However, when the fresh, hot pizzas arrived, they were very acceptable. Tom liked the taco pizza and the veggie pizza while Wendy preferred the pepperoni pizza and the ham and cheese calzone. The soup was chicken noodle and had probably come right from the can. The salad fixings consisted of some fresh iceberg lettuce, poor quality tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and dried out diced carrots. and a few other items. A number of reasonably good salad dressings were available. The spaghetti was sticky and somewhat cold and it was not helped by the tasteless tomato paste sauce. The desserts included fried dough, and something that Ginny Birchmire described as a "pizza cherry crumb pie". This was a pizza crust coated with cherry pie filling and sprinkled with crumbs. It was quite good. A similar dessert had apple filling and there was also one with chocolate, which was incredibly sweet. Our suggestion would be to stick with the pizzas and choose wisely from the salad items. Then any of the desserts would make an appropriate end to a meal. There are certainly a number of tasty items to select from to make this a "bargain" restaurant.
