We usually do not review bars and their restaurants, but we decided to list this one. because it is a hangout for the "locals" and a fun place. J.J.'s looks a bit sleazy! It has low ceilings, and is dimly lit, but does have a cut tin lantern over each table. The rooms have dark stained, rough cut boards and "neon beer sign motif and other accents" (Thomas Birchmire). The bar is in the front room and then there are two small dining areas. In spite of the fact that the decor is "early barroom", the food is excellent. It is not the kind of place that you look at from the outside and are drawn in! Fortunately, Wendy has been there several times and is aware of its charm (?). The menu offers "Nibbles Nook" to pizzas, calzones, salads, seafoods, and more. The fare is mostly good, American food. This restaurant did far better than the renowned, Woodman's, and the price was much less. Their seafood could have been served in the finest of restaurants and been perfectly acceptable.

J.J.'s Large Sampler ($19.95 for 2 people) Excellent - Fried white fish, shrimp, scallops, clams, onion rings, French fries, served with cole slaw. This was really a portion for 3 people. There were few French fries and loads of wonderful seafood is a light, delicious batter. There was only one clam with a belly that was too big for Wendy to handle! Tom likes clam strips and there were some of those too. The cole slaw was slightly sweet and also very good. |
