Although this restaurant does not get the highest rating on this visit, it continues to be one of Wendy's favorites. She likes the informal open air dining and the view. This establishment is at North Beach, which is part of the Hampton Beach area. It is situated across from the water. There are six dining areas to choose from, three enclosed dining rooms downstairs, outside tables on the first floor, and an enclosed area with screens on the second floor and an outside area on the second floor. We prefer the second level because you can see the ocean over the seawall. The drill goes like this: Go to the outside window and order your meal, receive a number and wait for it to be called. When you hear the number you receive your meal inside, hot food at the counter, soft drinks at a window, and wine, beer and coolers, at another window. Then you are free to sit in any area. The restaurant is very informal and serves on paper plates with plastic utensils and condiments in single servings. This time Wendy found it particularly annoying that French's Tartar Sauce came in small packets, as did the catsup and mustard. Also annoying was the butter, which either came in tiny containers, or melted in a very shallow cup that did not allow for dipping because the butter spilled over the top. The butter was also not hot enough. In spite of these few problems, the food was really good! The seafood here is always fresh, served hot, and the wait is short. We can't figure out why people rave about Woodman's of Essex. This restaurant is similar and has a nicer view, many items are less expensive, and it has better food. Maybe people like the other location better!
Below is just one part of the menu. The other pages have "House Specialties", "Pasta", "Landlubbers Dinners", "Surf and Turf", "From the Lobster Pool", a list of appetizers, a sandwich board listing, and loads of side orders.
NOTE: We initially reviewed this restaurant on one of the first days of the season. When we returned later in the summer, we found the butter to be hot and the lobsters to be very hot. The staff had obviously gotten the routine down better.
RESTAURANT: LITTLE JACKS 539 Ocean Boulevard, Hampton Beach, NH May 27, 2000 MEAL: Dinner BREAD: Whole grain, average dinner rolls SALAD: APPETIZER: ENTREE: Twin Lobster ($18.95 - price changes during the
season) Excellent. Lobsters are served with melted butter
(ask for two containers before you venture upstairs), corn
on the cob still in the husk, but without the silk, a
container of cole slaw, and a bag of potato chips (40%
reduced oil Maine Potato chips made in Canada!). The meal
comes with a metal lobster cracker and a wooden pick. The
lobsters were hot, but not really steaming. Captain's Platter ($15.95) Excellent. A good sized
portion of shrimp, clam strips (by choice), scallops,
haddock, fillet of sole, French fries, served with a small
container of cole slaw. There were two generous pieces of
haddock and all the seafood was lightly battered and cooked
perfectly. The French Fries, however, were cut thick and
they were a bit soggy. DESSERT: OTHER: Very informal A nice variety of dining rooms that meet the needs of
all weather conditions Plenty of free parking in two lots OVERALL: B+ when initially reviewed A- for later in the season - If they changed the way
the condiments are served and did a slightly better job with
the French fries, this would definitely be an "A"
