WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

Johnny's Luncheonette has a retro decor with a modern day menu. Unlike the original diners, the selections in this restaurant are healthier and better prepared. There are no "greasy burgers of the 1960's"(Thomas Birchmire). The splashy colors of the 60's are here, however, along with the closely aligned banquettes and the casual style of the wait staff in their Johnny's tee shirts. Johnny's says they are, "Where the folks get their yolks". This catchy slogan might imply that this restaurant is only open for breakfast specialties. This is not the case, although breakfast is served all day (until closing at 9 p.m.). Johnny's offers the traditional breakfast menu that includes Flapjacks, Waffles, French Toast, and Blintzes and then offers sides like Salsa, Collard Greens, etc., along with more standard ones. The first menu below lists the other dishes "From the Skillet." A page of Johnny's menu that is not shown below tells of the Shakes, Sodas, Ice Cream, Pies, etc., that are offered. Also available is Beer and Wine.

MEAL:

BREAD:

SALAD:

APPETIZER:

ENTREE:

Grilled Portabello Mushroom Salad ($6.95) Quite Good- Ample portion of delicious greens with roasted red peppers, Balsamic vinaigrette, and sprinkled with croutons and Parmesan cheese.

The Jack and Marion ($8.95) Very Good, but not excellent! Smoked Atlantic Salmon, Bermuda onion, tomato and cucumber on a toasted onion bagel with chive cheese. In order to have made this, "excellent", it would have had to have a ripe tomato, chive cheese with a little more taste, and no dark parts on the fish.

DESSERT:

OTHER:

Very informal

The complete menu is available for take-out

Metered parking in a lot right in front of the restaurant or on the street

Although air-conditioned, this restaurant always seems to be warm

The tee shirts of the wait staff get very unsightly by the end of their shift, i.e., they are wet or have food spilled over them

This is a fun restaurant, but not one to relax in and have a quiet conversation.

Service is quick
