When we entered this restaurant Wendy was immediately turned off by the carpeting. Perhaps it was just wet, but it appeared to be heavily soiled. After we looked past the carpeting we thoroughly liked everything else that we saw. This place is light and open with a high, vaulted, wooden ceiling and windows in the triangular peak. Everything was clean throughout, even the blades of the paddle fans. This is one of Wendy's big issues as dust is often caked on them in other places. The artificial flowers on each table were a nice touch. The wait staff here all seemed to be above the average in their attempts to be helpful and cheerful. Breakfast and lunch are served from 6 AM to 3 PM. We came at lunch time and chose a more traditional luncheon meal. We want to return and try some of the specialties like Hash Stuffers (corned beef hash stuffed into potato skins topped with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce or cheese sauce), Portobello Benedict, Banana Bread French Toast or Apple Crisp Waffles. Along with the breakfast items, the King Street Cafe also offers items like, Steak Tips, Panko Breaded Chicken Breast, Shrimp Scampi, Fish and Chips, as well as burgers and a nice variety of salads. There is an extensive list of side orders (Kielbasa, Strawberries, Cucumber Salad, etc.) so the diner should be able to have just about any combination of the usual breakfast items. Also on the premises is a deli.
Note: We returned on 7/16 /06 and found everything to be excellent so we are upgrading our rating to an "A-". We again noticed how pleasant and friendly the wait staff is.
RESTAURANT: KING STREET CAFE AND
DELI 390 King Street, Franklin,
MA DATE: June 2006 MEAL: Lunch DECOR: BREAD: SALAD: APPETIZER: ENTREE: Asian Chicken Salad ($8.99)
Excellent - The chicken was tender, the dressing was tasty,
the presentation was colorful. Baby salad greens were used
instead of the usual iceberg or romaine
lettuce. Clam Strip Platter ($6.99)
Excellent - A good sized portion for the price. Strips were
lightly battered with a pleasant coating. The French fries
were coated with something and were excellent. Tom described
the cole slaw as being "a nice balance of all the
ingredients." Chicken Caesar Wrap ($7.49) Very
Good. Packed with tender white meat and nicely presented. A
bit bland for Tom who likes evrything spicy. Chili - ($1.99/cup) Interesting!
Not your usual style. This one must have been home made. It
was full of ground beef and not overloaded with beans or
thickener. The sauce was light, compared to the usual sticky
orange concoction that restaurants serve. Not spicy enough
for Tom, but he eats foods so spicy that others would cringe
at the thought of eating them. DESSERT: OTHER: Plenty of parking in a large
lot Dress is casual OVERALL: B+
We were not in agreement on this one so the rating is a
compromise. Wendy liked the casual ambiance and the food.
Tom was annoyed that the waitress did not check to see if
everything was okay. She failed to offer more hot coffee or
tea. She also failed to note that although she said there
were creamer containers on the table, there was only one
left. Wendy tends to rate more on a restaurant's "feel" and
the quality of the food and not the service.
