Places that are unique are fun to visit! The Main Street Station falls in this category because, as they say on their menu, they are "not your typical diner." This diner has the "diner look" in the front section but an attractive room has been added to the back. Yankee magazine liked it so well that they voted the restaurant, "New Hampshire's No. 1 Diner." The eatery is decorated using a dining car theme. It has pictures of trains on the walls and booths with etched glass separating the high backed wooden benches. There is only room for 8 tables in the front portion of the restaurant and about 12 tables in the rear, along with a small bar. The table tops have glass over gingham fabric. The menu reflects the theme and includes items like "Station Sandwiches." Also available are fish dishes, Italian, Oriental, and Mexican fare, as well as healthy salads and ribs, steaks, chicken, etc. All of the food is prepared to order so the menu advises diners that meals will take 15 - 20 minutes and sandwiches and salads take 10 - 15 minutes preparation time. The Main Street Station serves breakfast, lunch and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday. They are open for breakfast and lunch on Monday and closed on Tuesday. Although the food is somewhat "average" here, we liked the place! The menu is varied and has many items that sound appetizing. The people are friendly, the pace is relaxed, it is a little "funky", and it deserves another visit.
RESTAURANT: THE MAIN STREET
STATION ADDRESS: 105 Main Street, Plymouth, New Hampshire DATE: September 22, 2001 MEAL: Lunch BREAD: SALAD: APPETIZER: ENTREE: Rip Van Ruben Sandwich ($5.49) Nicely prepared on
marble toast. Cole slaw was sweet but also had a vinegar
"bite" to it. Ham and Mushroom Quiche with House Salad ($5.99) The
quiche was a little watery. This was probably due to the
moisture that came from the whole mushrooms that were in it.
It tasted fine, but neither the quiche nor the crust were
appetizing colors, so it was not a particularly attractive
presentation. The salad was served on the side and was the
"typical" garden salad with a nice honey mustard dressing
served on the side. DESSERT: OTHER: Everything on the menu can be boxed for take
out There are low fat dishes that can be prepared without
oils or fats OVERALL: A- for the sandwich B- for the quiche (We are spoiled by the absolutely wonderful quiches
made at the Common Man, a nearby restaurant.)
