WENDY AND TOM DINE OUT

It is hard to refer to Blue-Ribbon Bar-B-Q as a restaurant. It is more like a tiny "take-out joint" that has counter seating for 10 people and two tables on the sidewalk. The menu invites people to "get in here and eat", but it might be better to say, "get in here and get your food and eat it at home!" The establishment consists of an L-shaped counter where orders are taken at one end and given out at the other. Available is Pulled Pork, Beef Brisket, Burnt Ends, Pulled Chicken, Smoked Sausage, Memphis Dry-Rubbed Ribs, Barbecued Chicken, and Jamaican Jerked Chicken. Platters come with a choice of two side dishes (Baked Beans, Cole Slaw, Rice and Beans, Green Beans, Collard Greens, Mashed Potatoes, Black-Eyed Corn). Also available is a Barbecued Burrito, a Brisket Sandwich and a "Big Green Salad." Pies, cobblers and bars can be ordered for dessert. According to the Blue-Ribbon, it is "inspired by the classic roadside barbecue joints that dot the American South." They say that they offer "the best of authentic Southern regional barbecue." All of their barbecue "is cooked at low temperatures for long periods of time over oak and hickory hardwoods, producing moist, flavorful meats and the distinctive pink smoke ring which is a sign of a real barbecue." We did not disagree that the barbecue was "authentic", but we disagreed on its appeal. Tom felt that it was too fatty, but Wendy liked the moistness of the ribs and only found them to be slightly fattier than most. After all, we are talking ribs here! You can't expect them to be lean. The joint itself is not clean enough for our tastes. It is not a place that we would go to eat. It is too far for us to travel for take-out, but it may also be the only place around with real barbecue.

ENTREE:

Memphis Dry-Rubbed Barbecued Ribs Platter (1/3 slab $9.95) Average - Collard Greens and Green Beans. Vegetables were over boiled and the meat was too fatty - Thomas

Memphis Dry-Rubbed Barbecued Ribs Platter (1/3 slab $9.95) Good - Mashed Potatoes, Black-Eyed Corn (corn with black-eyed peas) - Wendy. Perhaps it is because Wendy never orders mashed potatoes that she thought these were particularly good. The corn and peas combination was unappealing.

"Supper for 6" available for $66.95

OVERALL:

C for food from Thomas, who likes lean ribs!
B +for food from Wendy, who likes faay ribs!
D+ for atmosphere

Although Wendy thinks the ribs are really good, this would not be a place that we would return to to eat in. It is not our kind of eatery, but it would be a reasonable place for take-out food if you like the offerings.
